Recycle Now and Save! New recycling and garbage program starts January 2nd, 2009.

Starting January 2nd, residents and businesses in the Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) will have a new way to reduce their waste and save as the TNRD starts the new "Pay-as-you-Throw" garbage collection program at transfer stations and landfills along with free unlimited recycling.

To Recycle Now and Savesimply combine your recyclables in a see-through blue or clear bag - no sorting needed - and dispose of the garbage that's left using convenient "Eco-cards", prepaid punch cards available from most municipal offices and retailers. Read on for more information about the program.

The new program was introduced in June of 2008 with newsletters being sent to all TNRD homes and businesses in June, September and December. Staff have also been hosting community meetings and orientation sessions at the 16 new recycling depots that have opened in the last six months across the region (with the exception of the City of Kamloops, which has recently launched its own recycling collection program.)

It's all part of our Solid Waste Management Plan to reduce garbage going to local landfills, provide more service, meet our waste reduction goal of 30% and help keep a lid on taxes.

  • Here's how it works Simply recycle as much waste as you can and dispose of what's left for just $1 per bag or a set fee based on volume using a prepaid "Eco-card".
  • Step 1: Combine your recyclable items in a single see-through blue or clear bag - no sorting needed - and place the garbage that's left in your garbage container or bag. Remember to keep glass and cardboard separate and place in separate bins for recycling.
  • Step 2: Purchase prepaid Eco-cards available at most municipal offices and more than 40 local retailers in values of $10, $20 and $50. Fees for larger loads start at $5 for a short-box pickup truck and $10 for a full-sized pickup truck. To make it easier, local businesses and larger waste generators can set up an account instead of purchasing Eco-cards.
  • Step 3: Dispose of your garbage after presenting your Eco-card to the attendant who will punch the appropriate number of holes in your card and drop your recycling in the bins provided. The more you recycle, the longer your Eco-card will last and the more you'll save!
